Further research is required to corroborate the applicability of the vicious cycle hypothesis as a possible explanation for recurrent epileptic seizures.

However, the authors acknowledge that LPI is a component of a signaling network that encompasses naturally occurring “endocannabinoids” such as 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) found in human tissues. In contrast to LPI, which amplifies incoming electrical signals, endocannabinoids such as 2-AG inhibit the release of neurotransmitters from nerve cells in response to increased cerebral activity. Intriguingly, enzymes are capable of converting LPI and 2-AG to one another.
